Usually, by the 2nd or 3rd week of January, your New Year’s Eve optimism about 2019 is beginning to lose its glow as the reality of life and your business sets in. It may even be quite demotivating to look at the goal you set and realize you’re nearly halfway through the first month of the year and haven’t made any progress. It turns out, you may be looking at the wrong goal.
About a year and a half ago I was increasingly frustrated with my physical shape and by the spring of 2018, I had had it. I wasn’t fitting into any of my clothes. I was too heavy and knew I needed to get back down to between 18-19% body fat. I was at almost 26%. If you’ve tried to move your body fat percentage then you know, it moves incredibly slow. If I had only been focused on that, I would have been very frustrated. I’ve attached the graph below and you’ll see the week to week changes are in one-tenth of one percent increments, and often nothing at all. Over time though you can see the trend down and also notice the weight fluctuates a lot.
But body fat and weight wasn’t my daily and weekly focus. My focus was getting to the gym 4 days a week no matter what. I also focused on eating clean, though it was the 4 days a week that was the first domino for me. I wasn’t 100% perfect, I did miss 5 workouts throughout that period, though I was obsessed with hitting my 4. I still am.
If you feel you’re getting a little frustrated with your goal I want you to go back to focusing on the daily or weekly activity. Be obsessed with identifying and sticking with that, and then the result you want is all but guaranteed.
